Family, Friends, Launch Amy Crabtree Foundation
The new organization gives donations to groups that represent four causes Amy Crabtree supported.
At a gathering last night, family and friends officially launched the Amy Marie Crabtree Foundation, which will give donations to various charities.
The foundation is in memory of Amy Crabtree, who passed away in November 2009 from brain cancer, and donations will be made to groups that represent four causes: brain cancer research, helping abused animals, helping abused women and underprivileged children.
“It’s just really a fun night," said John Crabtree, her husband and the owner of Crabtree's Kittle House, where the event was held. The date of Aug. 2 was chosen because it was Amy's birthday. This year she would have turned 55.
A silent auction was held, with prizes including bottles from the Kittle House wine cellar, an autographed Derek Jeter jersey, and paraphernalia from the Yankees, Mets and Duke University. There was also a raffle held.
Already, four charities have been selected to correspond to the foundation's four categories: The SPCA chapter for Westchester, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Have a Chance Walk to Fight Brain Tumors and the Hope’s Door women's shelter.
“We’re thrilled to be chosen," said Robin Meng, a co-development manager for SPCA.
The foundation owes its existence to the work of John Crabtree, his four daughters and support from extended family and friends, who attended.
Family spoke fondly of their memories of Amy.
“She was such as positive personality all the time," said Lisa Crabtree, one of John's sisters.
“This is a great event because Amy was just too young," said Clare Crabtree Eberts, another sister.
The foundation's launch is the latest in a series of initiatives done to honor Amy Crabtree. Earlier this summer, the Kittle House began hosting its weekly "Sparkle For A Cause," in which portions of the restaurant's sales have been given to a new charity each week. Last fall, Amy's Garden, a new green space to the right of the Kittle House building, was dedicated in her memory.
