Five Things to Know Today: Selesnick Approved; Tree of Life Ceremony

Plus: Selesnick approved, Energize New Castle is formed.

 

1. The group Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam will hold its annual Tree of Life ceremony, at the Mount Kisco Holiday Inn at 6 p.m. The event serves both as a chance to remember loved ones and celebrate the holidays, according to the group's description. High school students from Fox Lane and Horace Greeley will sing in choirs, while News 12 reporter Lisa LaRocca will be the host. The event's culmination is a tree lighting ceremony.

2. Greeley Principal Andrew Selesnick was approved last night by the Chappaqua school board to become the new assistant superintendent for leadership development & human resources, an expanded HR position. His new new starts July 1, 2012. Meanwhile, the district will conduct a search for a new high school principal, coinciding with a search for a principal for Roaring Brook Elementary School. It is hoped that replacements for both schools will be selected by late February to early March, according Superintendet Lyn McKay.

3. Last night, dozens of folks in the New Castle community met to launch Energize New Castle, a group that will promote sustainability, particularly in helping people to energy assessments of their homes. The new group is a local branch of the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (NWEAC), which is made up to 14 communities in the 14. The Energize chapters will evenutally be in each community, and so far Bedford has taken the lead in doing a pilot program.

4. McKay will make a decision on the future of Chappaqua's two middle schools at the school board's Dec. 13 meeting. In her update to the board on Tuesday, she described how district officials have been working on a mock schedule to look at the impact of proposed longer class periods. 5. The Bedford school board meets tonight at 8 p.m., at the Fox Lane Middle School little theatre.
