Local Groups 'Sparkle' at Kittle House

Weekly ladies nights serve as mini fundraisers. New foundation in honor of Amy Crabtree to launch.

Every Tuesday night, patrons at Crabtree's Kittle House will have a chance to turn out and support local organizations.

The restaurant's new initiative, called Sparkle For A Cause, involves a holding Tuesday-evening ladies nights (men are included) and serving sparkling wine cocktails and food. Portions of each night's sales go to a new group every week.

The first night was held more than a week ago for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, according to owner John Crabtree. Last night was to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester, while upcoming groups include the Mount Kisco Child Care Center on July 12, and the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center on July 18.

"They're all great causes," Crabtree said.

Demand for the program has been positive and there is now a list of 40 charitable groups who has expressed interest in participating, according to Crabtree.

"They love the idea of it," he said.

In fact, while the original intent of Sparkling For A Cause was for it to be a summer program, it will run until at least October, according to Crabtree, due to the demand. Patrons can also fill out comment card suggestions for which groups that want to participate in future weeks, Crabtree said.

The small-scale fundraisers are being held in Amy's Garden, a green space adjacent to the restaurant that was dedicated last October in memory of Amy Crabtree, John's wife. She passed away from cancer in November 2009.

The two, who first dated in high school and had four daughters, were virtually inseperable.

"We never could stay apart," John Crabtree said.

A new organization, the Amy Crabtree Foundation, will be launched on Aug. 2 in her memory, he said. Its role will be to raise money and to donate it to help other charities, he explained.

Brian Skanes, executive director for the Boys & Girls Club, said that John and Amy were "so giving people." The Crabtrees were honored by the club at a gala several years ago, according to Skanes, and John Crabtree is a current board member for the organization.

For the group to be chosen, according to Skanes, is "really a nice thing to do."
