Rabbi Aaron Goldscheider (center) is excited that the menorah has been lit. At his left is Mount Kisco Mayor Michael Cindrich. To the right is Larry Levy, who at 97 is one of the synagogue's oldest members.

Local Jewish congregations marked the first night of Hanukkah on Tuesday night. In Mount Kisco and Chappaqua, menorahs were lit to mark the start of a holiday also referred to as the Festival of Lights.

Rabbi Yosef Butman of Chabad of Armonk, Chappaqua & Pleasantville noted the symbolism of having light in the darkness. Turnout included about 25 kids for the Chappaqua lighting, which was done in front of the New Castle Community Center.

Over at Mount Kisco Hebrew Congregation, dozens came out for its menorah lighting, which was followed by music and dancing.
