Tribou, Suspended Greeley Football Coach, Resigns

Bill Tribou has resigned as head varsity football coach and physical education teacher at Horace Greeley High School, according to a joint statement released by the coach and school district.

The announcement comes after Tribou  for an undisclosed reason this spring. Both the school district and now former coach declined to discuss the reason for the suspension and resignation in a joint statement issued this week.

“The Chappaqua Central School District and Mr. William Tribou, a coach and teacher of physical education in the district for more than 25 years, have reached a settlement regarding the Section 3020-a Education Law disciplinary proceedings brought against Mr. Tribou in April 2012. The settlement calls for Mr. Tribou's resignation effective August 31, 2012," the statement reads.

Tribou will be paid the equivalent of one year's salary, according to the statement. Provisions of the Education Law state that an employee suspended during disciplinary proceedings is entitled to full pay and benefits while the outcome of the proceedings is still pending. 

The school board scheduled a vote to approve the resignation at a special meeting on Monday evening.

Andrew Selesnick, assistant superintendent for leadership development and human resources at the Chappaqua Central School District, said Wednesday the district is not able to discuss the settlement more specifically at this time.

"This settlement brings the process to an immediate end, so there will be no further legal expense to the district as it moves forward with plans for the coming year," the statement continued. "Neither party will make any further comments regarding the circumstances surrounding this settlement agreement.”

Tim Sullivan, a longtime assistant coach who  in July, will serve as head coach for the 2012 season.

Tribou originally confirmed his suspension on May 3, roughly two weeks after he went missing from the school's campus.

Players, parents and alumni at a board of education meeting that week. Varsity football players attended the meeting and spoke out on Tribou's behalf. During the meeting, board of education members did not disclose why Tribou was suspended, citing an obligation not to get into details of matters involving specific personnel.

The Horace Greeley varsity football team began preparations for the coming season late last week and will start their season on Sept. 7 against Brewster High School.
