 r. Thornton is a double-board certified specialist in obstetrics\, gynec
 ology and maternal-fetalmedicine and is a former departmental vice chair
  of OB/GYN at Jamaica Hospital MedicalCenter in New York. She is now a c
 onsultant in perinatology and clinical professor of obstetricsand gyneco
 logy at New York Medical College in New York.\nDr. Thornton is the first
  black woman in the United States to be board-certified in high-riskobst
 etrics. She was the first African-American woman to be invited to become
  an oral examinerfor the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and
  a life fellow of the New YorkObstetrical Society and the New York Acade
 my of Medicine.\nHer family memoir\, The Ditchdigger&rsquo\;s Daughters\
 , was adapted into an award-winningmovie and translated into 19 language
 s. Her new memoir entitled Something To Prove\, wasnamed the grand prize
  winner at the 2011 New York Book Festival. Her other books includeInsid
