So you think you want a career in the law? New Castle judges call interested high school students to the bar

by Judge David S. Zuckerman

Calling all high school students who dream of working in the legal system as judge, lawyer, police officer or clerk. New Castle Town Court Judges Douglas Kraus and I are seeking high school-aged students for court internships beginning the first week of November 2011. In order to accommodate as many interested students as possible, the schedule for the unpaid internships will be very flexible. The only requirement is that the students must reside in New Castle.

Occupy a front row seat to court proceedings

The New Castle Town Court is in session every Thursday evening in New Castle Town Hall starting at 7:30 p.m. and runs until around 10:00 p.m. The court hears all criminal cases –felonies, misdemeanors and violations – which take place within the Town of New Castle, as well as requests for, and enforcement of, search warrants and arrest warrants (Felonies, however, are only heard through the indictment stage). The court also presides over all traffic and parking violations, ABC (Alcohol and Beverage Control Act) violations, landlord-tenant matters and small claims cases. In addition, we act as Family Court judges for emergency family court orders of protection and emergency "persons in need of supervision" petitions.

Flexible hours to accommodate interns’ schedules

Interns will have a weekly opportunity to attend criminal, civil and traffic court sessions on Thursday evenings and have personal access to judges, attorneys and police officers. Interns are expected to arrive at 7:00 p.m. on any evening they would be attending court. Interns might also be asked to assist court clerks in processing cases during non-court hours. However, the time commitment is flexible, to be worked out with the judges.

If you are interested in applying for a court internship, please contact court clerk Diane DiCerbo at (914) 238-7264 or by e-mail at Ddicerbo@Town.New-Castle.ny.us. Feel free to forward a resume.
