Baby Chicks Make Stop at Mt. Kisco Library

The chicks are meant to give kids a glimpse into nature.

For nearly the past two weeks, the has been home to several furry baby chicks, who have provided kids with a glimpse into their lives.

Deirdre John, a children's librarian, said the chicks give kids "a connection with nature here at the library," and thought it would be fun for the kids to see them.

Kids have had several occasions to interact with them, including at story times, where the chicks were taken out of the tank and placed on a blanket. Story time would be accompanied with singing, according to Johnson. Kids were also allowed to handle the chicks.

The chicks were brought from a Cornell Cooperative Extension site in Valhalla, where they hatched. Originally, they were to be hatched at the library, but that damaged the children's room also damaged the available incubator, Johnson said. This is the second year that the library has hosted baby chicks, and Johnson hopes to do a similar project with butterflies during the summer.

Generally, the chicks have been met with good reception, Johnson said.

Bonnie Tjomstol, Mount Kisco, stopped by the children's room with her son, Finn, and got a look. She said it's great that the library does the program.

Finn Tjomstol, who is a first grader at Mount Kisco Elementary School, described how he encountered a similar project there. From his school experience, he described baby chicks in general as being "fluffy and not fluffy at the same time."

The chicks, who are quickly outgrowing their tank and showing brown feathers, won't be at the library for long, Johnson said. Saturday could very well be the last chance to see them, with the beginning of next week being the latest. Their next destination is not yet known, she said.
