Grab and Go Family Planner: Presidents' Day Weekend Fun

Take in a circus, hang out with the birds and visit a museum (for free!)

Sure, some of your peers may be heading to the slopes or to sunny Florida, but if you are in town this weekend, there are some wonderful things to do with your family.

HANDS ON THE FARM

Where/When: Approximately ten minutes away from our area is the  Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, located at 630 Bedford Rd., Pocantico Hills.  Visit on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20 1 p.m.-2 p.m for this program where your family can get up close and personal with life on the farm.

Why go: On Saturday, learn about the life of a hen at Stone Barns and collect freshly laid eggs. On Sunday, learn about the life cycle of plants and lend a hand in the Greenhouse to help the farm stay productive in the winter. Programs are appropriate for children ages 2 to 14.

SATURDAY SPECIALS

Where/When: On Saturday, Feb. 19, visit the at 195 S Greeley Ave. at 2 p.m.

Why go: This is a program designed for special needs kids and their families.  There will be stories, songs, sensory activities and socializing.

Where/When: The Royal Hanneford Circus is back in town at the Westchester County Center at 198 Central Ave. in White Plains. Three shows at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.  on both Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20.

Why go: Less than a 15 minute drive, this is a great way to spend some time together as family enjoying acrobats, three ring acts and a baby elephant. The show lasts 2-2.5 hours.

GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

Where/When: Visit the , 260 Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Bedford Corners on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Why go: Take the whole family and participate in this annual nationwide event celebrating bird watching and bird conservation. For more info, call 914-666-8448 or westsanc@optonline.net

Pricing: Free. RSVP requested but not required.

MUSEUMS AROUND THE AREA

Where/When: If you hold a card in good standing, you can take advantage of free passes to museums in Westchester, Connecticut and NYC. 

Why go: You can go to see on the Intrepid or back in time at the American Museum of Natural History. Check out Stepping Stones Children’s Museum (which just re-opened) or art at Katonah Museum of Art. This is a great weekend to try something different with the family. Each pass is specific to the museum (how many, adults vs. kids etc).
