Service Dogs. Guiding Eyes for the Blind welcomed five families in its Heeling Autism program. "Heeling Autism dogs ensure safety for children with autism and help them to develop lasting emotional and social bonds" the organization says. There's a two-year waiting list for the dogs trained by the Yorktown-based group.
Spooktober. Three of Historic Hudson Valley’s major Halloween-themed events — Horseman’s Hollow, Irving’s ‘Legend,’ and Legend Celebration—received underwriting support from First Niagara Bank Foundation. These popular Halloween experiences kicked off Oct. 6, and run throughout the month of October.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rockland Diagnostic Imaging in West Nyack and NYS Cancer Services Program of the Hudson Valley offer free screenings for uninsured and underinsured women age 40 and up on Oct. 16. It Can Wait. A free public forum on the dangers of texting while driving will be held at Rockland Community College from 1-3 pm Oct. 10. The panel discussion will include law enforcement issues and violations, the distracted driving laws, strategies for the professional, and an RCC student's perspective on texting while driving.
Hispanic Heritage Month. Three county residents honored by the Westchester Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at a dinner Wednesday for their contributions to the community were Yankees baseball legend Bernie Williams, a long-time spokesperson for the Pleasantville-based non-profit organization Hillside Food Outreach; businessman Armando Rodriguez, on the board of directors of the Westchester County Association, the Westchester Arts Council board of trustees, and the board of trustees at his alma mater Iona College; and Fabiola Montoya of Port Chester, where she was the first Hispanic president of the PTA for the J.F.K Magnet School; a former board member at Open Door; and a former board member of the Tamarack Tower Foundation.
