Meet Lou Bastone of Chappaqua Paint and Hardware

This Patch series shines a spotlight on our favorite local businesses and the ones we may not know that well.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. This series is as much about supporting companies as it is about celebrating the places and faces that make our community special.

Our spotlight today is on Lou Bastone.

How did you come up with the name?
I wanted to incorporate the town's name into my business.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in this town?
It kind of chose me. The opportunity presented itself, and I then asked myself if I could bring something to the town to add on to what is here already. With over 20 years retail experience and some contracting experience I made the move.

Briefly, what business are you in?
Paint/Hardware/Houseware

What's the most difficult moment or challenge you've faced as a business owner?
Trying to build up a customer base with a poor street exposure.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?
There are always challenges, but I would rather look at then as opportunities :)

What's been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
Everyday that we can put a smile on a customer's face is a favorite moment.

What's the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
Delivery service.

How do you deal with difficult customers?
I understand that we are living in difficult times, so my staff and I try to please everyone we can.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
Donations in the form of: raffles, gift certificates, journal ads, or specific items. We cannot donate to all causes, but we try our best. We also sponsor a local baseball team each year. These are a few ways we give back to our community.

The plan behind this series at Patch is to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

This is as much about supporting local businesses as it is about celebrating the places and faces that make our community special.
