In an Observance of a Ten-Year Tradition, Crabtree's Kittle House is Serving Slow Roasted Pig Tonight

Slow-roasted Berkshire pig will be the main attraction on tonight's special menu at the tenth annual, "barbecue-like" Pig Roast and Wine Fest Dinner at Crabtree's Kittle House in Chappaqua. Proprietor John Crabtree said that two 45-pound hogs are being readied for the feast.

However a tempting number of other roasted summer savory specialities will also be prepared by Executive Chef Jay Lippin's kitchen crew including roast goat with a Jamaican Jerk seasoning, chickens from the John Boy farm, fresh prawns, Block Island swordfish, sweet sausage and vegetables.

The cost per person is $45 for dinner only or $85 for dinner with alcoholic beverages. Tax and gratuity are additional.

"Drinks and hors d'oeuvre are table and butler service and the rest of the menu is buffet style," Crabtree said.

"We will bring up assorted bottles of wine from every corner of the cellar and all are offered for the $85 dollar cost," said Crabtree. "They will be mostly wines that we have only a few bottles of and will take off of the list. All are delicious and interesting wines, and unlimited."

"All of our draft beers are included too," he added, mentioning Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold, Anchor Steam, Peekskill Brewery, Brooklyn Pilsner, 2 Roads 'Road2Run' double IPA, and Kittle Dark Ale.

Also on the menu

Starters. Passed hors d'oeuvre includes crayfish Hush Puppies, Kobe beef dogs in pastry, smoked wild salmon pizzettas, and baked Littleneck clams.

Appetizers. The list includes corn on the cob, salt roasted Hudson Valley fingerling potatoes, BBQ baked beans with smoked brisket, Firecracker cole slaw, roasted local summer vegetables, and Jalapeno cornbread with Wright's Farm honey butter.

Desserts. A selection of Kittle House classic sweet treats will be on display at a buffet table.

Seating will be available in both the garden and the dining room. "Seating can be anytime between 6:30 and 8 p.m.," said Crabtree, "and the barbecue will continue until everyone has had enough to eat." The regular menu will also be available.

The "Pig Roast and Wine Fest Dinner" is one of two festive summer dining extravaganzas held annually at the historic Chappaqua restaurant (evolved from a barn built in 1790). The other is an August clambake.

Piano player/vocalist John Cobert will perform in the Tap Room.
