NWH CEO Thanks People for Post-Sandy Help

During the week of October 28th, a community came together to survive Hurricane Sandy. When the storm arrived, many of our neighbors faced challenges from lack of power and heat that were compounded by their medical conditions. While not “ill,” many arrived at Northern Westchester Hospital out of fear that their normally manageable medical conditions could worsen. Other “worried well” simply came to Northern Westchester Hospital for safety and warmth. With our patient ranks growing and demand for our medical resources increasing, we looked for an alternative site for those who didn’t need to be in an acute care hospital or emergency room.

It took one quick phone call to Felix Charney, and within two minutes Summit Development had offered the use of Chappaqua Crossing to help address the needs of our community members. With help from the Red Cross, work was underway within just a few hours to turn Chappaqua Crossing into a Lodging Center that provided food, shelter, and safety. Through the good graces of community volunteers, this lodging center helped up to 100 people per day and housed 30 to 50 individuals at night, with heat, light, power, showers and warm meals.

On behalf of NWH, I offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross, Summit Development, the community of New Castle and to the numerous volunteers who helped address a major community problem.
