Make Your Small Space Feel Larger With These 8 Creative Tips!

Small spaces are a commonality for most people who live in a major metropolitan area or live in an old historic style home. For some of us, it's that awkward room that just feels claustrophobic or a space that we really want to create a more expansive, open view in.

While there isn't always a budget for tearing down walls and creating hard and fast additional square footage, there are tried and true tips for creating the feeling of a bigger interior.

We've got 8 of our favorites to share with you below.

Plants

Putting foliage in a space really opens the rest of the interior to be seen. The softness of natural, living things tends to break up the harsh lines of bare walls and drywall in the most unsuspecting of ways.

Mirrors

Of course the reflective nature of mirrors is going to vastly improve the implied square footage of a space. Mirrored closet doors, a mirrored wall in a room or a set of design oriented mirrors arranged nicely on a bare wall can greatly add depth and dimension to your space.

White Walls

Of course, in a majority of situations, white walls are going to make everything feel proportionately larger. Scale up your room visually by utilizing light neutrals on the walls and keeping furniture light, bright and airy to maximize the feeling of additional space.

Multi-Functional Furniture

Anytime there's a way to incorporate a piece of furniture that can be used as storage, extra seating and a coffee table all in one is a great find. Smaller spaces tend to have a lot less fluff to their existing area, allowing for a lot less overall furniture pieces. If there's a way to incorporate a table to multi-task as an office desk, dining table and game table in your home, invest in it and make it work for you.

Accents

Sprinkle your home with unique and personal accents that make it about you. If you can, using the same hue with varying tones gives a whole new perspective on trinkets and makes it fun, keeps it organized and chic looking all the while adding to the space instead of taking away.

Large Scaled Pieces

Oftentimes, people steer clear of oversized art pieces, paintings and furniture thinking that they will make a room feel smaller. In most cases, that's just not true. Have a small wall? Fill it up with the largest print you can find. Adding these giant artworks and unique items will really force your room to expand and show off its true size.

Keep The Windows Bare

Ditch the elaborate window treatments in tiny spaces. They draw too much attention, make the interior feel enclosed and are much more effort than they are worth. Keeping windows as open as possible allows for the eye to wander elsewhere, not to mention- more natural light will flood in which is also a plus.

Go Dark

This may sound contradictory to keeping things light, white and bright; but painting the ceiling or one wall in a dark, rich color can really make things feel more open. The complete stark contrast of black and white or a navy and winter white really add major depth, raise the ceiling up and create an almost "never ending" feeling to a space. The illusion and perception of dimension and depth created from this can be just what you need, though it sounds scary.
