Why should I hire a college adviser?

While the college process should be one of joy and anticipation, it can be fraught with frustration, tension and uncertainty as families try to evaluate appropriate college options for their teenager. This challenging, and at times overwhelming endeavor, has the ability to impact a student's life in rewarding ways. The college adviser can give your student individual attention that is focused around their strengths and needs while providing resources and reliable information about the college process. If the best appropriate fit between student and college is what the family is seeking, a college adviser has the expertise to make college acceptances happen.

College advisers have important, up-to-date knowledge. College admissions trends change yearly. From one year to the next, an applicant can expect changes to the application format, required essays, testing standards, mandatory high school coursework and college visitation requirements. Long gone are the days of typed applications or better yet, hand-written applications with White-Out smudges. A student needs to present themselves in the best possible light in order to gain the attention of the over-worked admissions counselor.

Social media has changed the way some colleges evaluate prospective students. In a recent study by Kaplan Test Prep, 500 college and university admissions personnel were surveyed, and roughly 25% admitted to searching the social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc…) for prospective students to judge whether they should be admitted. Do you know what a college can find if they Google your son or daughters name?

Other trends, such as overuse of the Common Application, have made it crucial for students to show their interest in a college or university by visiting the colleges and personalizing their essays to each individual school. Or, your child may be gifted creatively in the performing or visual arts. Do they know how to showcase this by using a Tumblr account for the Common Application? And does your student-athlete have an athletic resume and NCAA eligibility?

The reasons for a college adviser are vast. With college being one of the most essential elements necessary for future success, it is no wonder why families turn to us for guidance during this pivotal time. We make your student's needs our priority to assure they have options for the future. Options that are both appropriate and respectable for your child and your family.
