HURRICANE SANDY: A DISASTER FORETOLD What Rising Sea Levels Mean for Our Homes, Our Jobs and Our Children

On January 16, 2013 at 7 pm at the Chappaqua Library Theater, the League of Women Voters of New Castle and the Chappaqua Library are co-sponsoring a forum on Rising Sea Levels.  Come listen to and ask questions of our panel of highly regarded experts in the fields of climate change and environmental conservation. This is a very important issue that is already impacting our lives in dramatic ways.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy was horrible, but it should not have been a surprise. In 2010, the New York State Sea Level Rise Task Force issued a report that largely anticipated what occurred and contained recommendations to reduce the impact of such events.  So far, few of these recommendations have been heeded.

This program will discuss the findings and recommendations of the Sea Level Rise Task Force and the current efforts to prepare for and recover from similar extreme weather events. 

The panelists are:

Michael Gerrard -- Professor and Director, Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia Law School, and a member of the Task Force; resident of New Castle.

Kristin Marcell -- Special Projects Coordinator, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Hudson River Estuary Program; Sea Level Rise Task Force Steering Committee Vice Chair.

John Parker -- Former Regional Attorney, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The forum will be moderated by Robi Schlaff, a New Castle resident who chaired the Sea Level Rise Task Force Steering Committee and has been involved in environmental issues all of her distinguished career.
