How to Motivate Yourself to Pay off Debt in 2013!

Make your resolution stick this year with some motivational tactics.

If one of your resolutions for 2013 is to get yourself out of debt and back on your feet, then you might need a little motivation to get started on the path to financial freedom!

First, create a plan!  Paying off your debts may be tough and take some sacrifices on your part.  Start or fine tune your budget.  For tips on how to do this, check out my blog article “Do you Dislike the Word Budget.”

For some people, this can even be a ‘double resolution.’  To save money you may decide to cut out take out food, buying fast food or coffee, and start brining lunch to work.  Little things like this will not only put more money in your pocket towards paying off your debt, but may also make you feel healthier and even loose a few pounds!

  1. Out of Debt Party: plan to throw yourself a party once you reach your goal!  Plan your ‘debt free’ party as you go for your goal!  This will keep you motivated to continue with your goal and give you something to look forward to as you get closer and closer to becoming debt free!
  2. Indulge Yourself: Allow yourself to indulge in other things to curb your spending.  Since you are attempting to pay down debt, don’t indulge by purchasing, but try to dedicate a day to you by doing your favorite activity, cooking your favorite meal, or just relaxing with a book or movie or volunteer!
  3. Keep Track of your Progress: consider writing down your daily/ weekly progress someplace visible in your home or office so you can track and see your progress daily!!  This will help you keep on track with your goal and motivate you by seeing your progress
  4. Set up a Support System: Just like quitting a habit can be hard, curbing your spending can as well!  Pick a buddy (friend, family member or spouse) who you can give a call when you feel the pressure to spend or feel guilty about a purchase you made.  Remember, if you do mess up and get off track, it’s never too late to get BACK on track!
