Susie Pender, New Castle NOW Co-Founder, Dies at 59

Chappaqua resident and New Castle NOW co-founder Susie Pender passed away on Wednesday at age 59, the online news site announced through an obituary posting. Her death came just more than a week after her birthday, according to the obituary.

Pender is survived by her husband, son, daughter and three siblings, New Castle Now's obituary stated. Friends are welcome to attend a service on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Clark Associates Funeral Home at 4 Woods Bridge Road in Katonah according to the obituary.

Pender, along with fellow residents Christine Yeres and Ann Marie Fallon, launched the site in 2007 after getting a grant from American University's J-Lab.

In an announcement for the launch, Pender at the time wrote that New Castle Now was covering a community that was dependent on regional media for coverage.

"Like many similarly situated commuter communities, New Castle lacks consistent, timely coverage by regional news outlets. We believe a weekly online newspaper, decidedly not a blog, will help to fill this void."

The trio, at the time, won a $12,000 grant and were one of nine groups that did so, according to a 2007 New York Times profile on the site's launch.

Pender's previous professional career included practicing law and writing for The American Lawyer, according to the Times profile.
