Fox Lane Students Support Harckham

(Below is a letter from students who are in the Fox Lane High School Young Democrats)

To the Editor:
As our county legislator, Peter Harckham has been a dedicated member of the Westchester County government. It’s time to re-elect Mr. Harckham to ensure the protection and progress of this county.  
As Westchester residents, we are responsible for protecting the finite resources that sustain us. This includes preserving the purity of our water--a frequently overlooked issue in Westchester County.  Once our water supply is ruined, it cannot be restored. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Peter Harckham, the county enacted a ban on the treatment of hydrofracking waste in any Westchester wastewater facility. He has been a dependable, powerful advocate of protecting our watershed property and the aquifers that we rely on for clean and safe drinking water.
In addition to Peter Harckham’s initiatives to protect our water supply, he has also been a strong advocate for other environmental issues that have benefited Westchester citizens. Mr. Harckham implemented countywide energy audits that have increased efficiency, saving homeowners money while creating jobs in the energy sector. Additionally, he was an advocate for the purchase of clean hybrid buses for the Bee Line bus system and passed a countywide anti-idling ordinance, two actions that have improved air-quality in Westchester.  Peter Harckham also passed legislation expanding the recycling program to include plastics 3 through 7, increasing the potential for recycling to conserve resources and save space in landfills.   
Westchester county is home to beautiful parks, wonderful people, and some of the highest tax rates in the nation. Peter Harckham has cut taxes by 2.2% and reduced spending by a significant $100 million. He co-sponsored legislation to offer property tax breaks to volunteer emergency first responders and veterans and succeeded in blocking pay increases for county officials. Peter Harckham has shown that a true leader can lower taxes and be fiscally responsible, while maintaining crucial services.  This is clear cut proof that Mr. Harckham is an excellent county legislator more than capable of maintaining a secure and healthy future for Westchester County residents.
