Why Should We Care about Harmful Fishing Practices?

Why Should we care about Harmful Fishing Practices?

Many of us have been made aware that global warming is affecting our world’s ecosystem in a negative way. To make matters worse, many commercial fishing companies choose to practice harmful fishing methods, which are destroying the world’s marine life. Just like you want to know where your meat, produce, and dairy products come from, now its time to also be aware of where your Fish comes from.

There are many different types of harmful fishing practices. One of the types of harmful fishing practices is Cyanide Fishing, which is when a commercial fishing company squirts a liquid dye in the ocean that paralyzes the fish and can be harmful to the fish and us. Another type is called bottom trawling, which is when a company drags a net across the bottom of the ocean and that tears up the ocean floor and damages the coral reef that takes up to 20 years to rebuild. You can learn more about these practices at the petition I created to raise awareness. Why should we care? We should care because in about 20 years the ocean will not be the same that it is today. To help prevent that, whenever you buy your fish ask your storeowner where they got their fish. If the store owners are unaware of the fishing practices used to get there fish, please encourage them to do there due diligence. If your store does know how they get their fish, you should promote their business. Even if it is a dollar or two more, isn’t that worth the price of clean, fresh and safe fish? If you want to help make a difference, Sign my petition below.
