Dobbs Ferry firefighter Joseph Omboni, Jr. was killed in a motorcycle crash on the Taconic Parkway Sunday afternoon, State Police said.
Omboni, 27, was driving northbound on the Taconic State Parkway in New Castle when he switched from the right to the left lane, subsequently striking the rear of a 2004 Saturn operated by a Yonkers resident, said Investigator Joseph Becerra of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
According to witnesses and preliminary investigations, Becerra said, Omboni was ejected from his 2007 Suzuki and struck a guard rail.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Yonkers driver and a passenger did not sustain significant injuries.
According to Becerra, who received reports from officers who informed friends and family members of the crash, Omboni was a lifelong Dobbs Ferry resident who was dedicated to his service as a volunteer firefighter.
Dobbs Ferry Fire Chief Jim Trezza said when he received the news this afternoon he was in shock.
"I've known him for eight or nine years and he's been a member of the department for six or seven," Trezza said.
Omboni was part of the Livingston Hose Fire Company.
Trezza said he'd spoken with other members of the department who, he said, "were also in states of disbelief."
"When a tragedy like this occurs we usually come down to the department headquarters and talk. We just couldn't believe it happened."
Outside of his volunteer work, Omboni worked as an auto mechanic for his family's business in Dobbs Ferry.
