Firefighters Respond to Bedford Propane Fire

All that remained of an outbuilding on a Bedford estate Thursday was debris after a propane fire from adjacent tanks. The fire came from three, 300-pound tanks, First Assistant Chief Peter Lazaro told reporters, who also said that the thanks did not explode.

Firefighters responded to the site, at 1061 Old Post Road, at about 9:30 a.m., said Bedford Fire Department Chief Peter Aquilino. While the main body of the fire was knocked down soon after the response, firefighters spent hours on site because they had to wait for flammable vapors to be ventilated. Aquiliano said that waiting was needed for the tanks to completely off gas.

Mutual aid was provided on site by firefighters from Bedford Hills, Katonah, Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge, South Salem and Goldens Bridge, while the Banksville Fire Department was on standby. Lewisboro's Volunteer Ambulance Corps was also available.

None of the other structures on the property, which is located off of a long side road, were damaged. According to Lazaro they included a main house and cottage. The outbuilding was about 12 by 12 feet, Lazaro added.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, Lazaro told reporters, but said that past incidences that involved lightning, which was present in the morning weather, striking a line. A defensive position is kept by firefighters in such situation, Lazaro also said.

The area has no fire hydrants, so five water tankers had to be used, Lazaro told reporters.
