New Castle Police Status Update on Closed Roads

New Castle officials, Con Edison, work on reopening roads after devastation from Hurricane Sandy

(Editor's Note: Below is a New Castle Police Department status update on road closures in town due to Hurricane Sandy. It was sent out Wednesday night):

After Hurricane Sandy passed through Town, there have been many hundreds of reports of wires down, trees down and blocked roads. All five State Highways were closed with multiple blocked locations on each State Highway. All County roads were blocked at multiple locations as well. The town Department of Public Works, Police Department and ConEd crews are teaming up to open our roads. As of 7PM tonight two State Highways are open. They are RT 117 & Rt 134. Crews are working tonight to open RTs 128, 133 and RT 120. We hope to have these State Highways open sometime tomorrow. After all State Highways, we will be opening County Roads and after that we will be working on opening neighborhoods that are closed off. The magnitude of the damage done to our road system is great, but Town agencies teamed up with ConEd are completely capable of restoring the Town to normalcy. The process will take time. Please be patient. We are coming to your road. Please understand that response times of emergency services will be longer than usual, but we will come when called. Please look after your neighbors and try to help each other during this emergency. Progress is being made and it is expected that as out of state mutual aid resources arrive, the pace of restoration of our roadways will accelerate. We will keep you posted with updates.
