Updated: Bedford Police Station Evacuated Due to Acid Odor

Updated, 8:30 p.m.

After evacuating the station late Tuesday afternoon, Bedford police were allowed to return to the building at about 7:30 p.m., police said.

The noxious odors detected earlier thought to be related to sulfuric acid used to clean a drain were apparently related to a sewage backup. Vogler Brothers Septic Tank Service was called to the scene to pump the system, according to Police Sgt. Melvin Padilla.

"Throughout the evacuation, we remained communications systems," he said. "All 911 calls were re-routed to Mt. Kisco and we were able to maintain our services to residents."

Westchester County police also assisted with a mobile communications unit brought to the police department parking lot.

"The town never went unprotected," said Padilla.

First story:

Bedford's police station in Bedford Hills was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after discovery of an odor that was brought about by a reaction with sulfuric acid, according to town Building Inspector Steven Fraietta.

Fraietta said that the acid was poured down a drain in a work lab at the station. The acid was being used to clean the drain, which was part of a routine procedure, but Fraietta explained that it had a reaction with a substance, and caused the odor to form.

The situation was discovered at approximately 4 p.m., Fraietta said, and the station was then evacuated. Clean up and ventilation work followed, according to the inspector, and work was still being done as of roughly 6 p.m.

It is not known what the acid reacted with, Fraietta said.

Providing mutual aid to Bedford police were the Bedford Hills Fire Department and Westchester County's hazmat.
