Chappaqua Turf Group Plans Flag Campaign

Committee discloses reaching $715,000 out of $1 million goal.

A group looking to bring a turf field to Horace Greeley High School is interested in starting a fundraising effort based on giving flags to people.

The Chappaqua Turf Committee (TCTC) disclosed its plans in a memo sent to the New Castle Town Board, which will get a presentation tonight for the proposal.

The group is suggesting selling flags to raise money. The flags would be purchased annually, would stay up for months and could be renewed annually. They would also carry personalized words from donors who purchase them. TCTC plans on handling the initiative.

"It is our hope that this initiative becomes an annual program and one that generates excitement about the Turf and Recreational field , along with a strong level of community engagement for our residents," the group wrote.

TCTC - it started raising money in 2011 - is seeking to raise $1 million to pay for installing the turf field near the bleachers, which would replace the existing grass field. The group disclosed that it has raised $715,000, with $385,000 needed.

Jim Nottingham, who is a chair for the committee, told Patch that the money raised is a mix of pledges, cash and money already sent to the Chappaqua school district to pay for an engineering study.

The town board will consider the item at its meeting, which starts tonight at 7:45 p.m., at New Castle Town Hall in Chappaqua. To read the meeting agenda or packet, click here to search.
