Man Who Bolted From Kisco Meeting to Close Shop

Tim Mallon, owner of the Village Shop furniture store, said he will soon close and blamed relations with the village as a factor.

The Mount Kisco furniture store owner who stormed out of a Planning Board meeting last spring amid a dispute over his landscaping proposal said he will soon close his business.

Tim Mallon, owner of the Village Shop, told Patch that Jan. 8 is the anticipated closing date. For about two months he has been winding down the store's operations, with liquidation signage displayed outside. 

The proprieter cited his relationship with the village government and getting busy with wholesale furniture work as reasons. Going forward, he explained that he plans to take his work elsewhere, with plans to expand in Connecticut.

Mallon remains furious with the village, arguing that it has selectively enforced its signage law, which restricted the use of certain neon signs, and that he has not been treated fairly compared to other businesses. 

Mallon, who left the Planning Board's April 2012 meeting with a profanity-laced tirade, described the village as "kind of corrupt in their ways." He lamented the fact that the site of his store, 91 E. Main St., will not have his landscaping proposal, which included an outdoor furniture display and dwarf shrubs. The Planning Board had some skepticism about the particular landscaping arrangement, and Mallon was asked about parking at the meeting before leaving.

Mount Kisco Village Manager James Palmer denied that the village has selectively enforced its sign ordinance against Mallon, saying that he was allowed to have neon sign indicated the store is open. 

"The village has not been selective."

Enforcement of neon signs that businesses had up before the ordinance was adopted roughly three years ago, however, are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, Palmer said, depending on the nature of their initial approvals. The village manager said he is not aware of inconsistent enforcement for signage posted after the law went into effect.

I bought an aluminum bench from the Village Shop this past Fall. A leg snapped off after several weeks of light usage, so I brought the bench back to the store expecting to exchange it for the identical bench. Tim Mallon examined the broken bench on the sidewalk outside his business and blamed me for breaking the leg of the bench. In an attempt to demonstrate how I was at fault, Mallon then wrestled with the bench until a second leg snapped off. He refused to replace the bench and stormed into his business, leaving me and the broken bench on the sidewalk. I am happy that Mr. Mallon, with his peculiar brand of customer service, is leaving Mt. Kisco behind.

I am happy to see this business close. Such an attractive building in the heart of the village deserves something better than an ugly outlet store--so out of place. The owner also seems out of place in Mount Kisco.

Some people will do or say anything to save a couple of bucks.The bench did not just break,You broke it and were trying to blame us.

You sound like a bigger jerk.Don't you have anything better to do than comment on someone without having the facts.If you really want to know the truth stop in the store and you can choose any sales reciept that we have from a retail customer and you can call them and see how they feel about my store.Didn't your mother tell you to think before you open your mouth? Tim, I did not believe that you could have been any more objectionable than you were when I tried to exchange the almost-new $195 bench to you - but you have surprised me and you've outdone yourself. When you close your store and leave Mt. Kisco next week, don't bother to look in your rear view mirror since nobody will be waving goodbye to you.

If you were informed you would know I paid almost $4,000 on applications and plan fees to go to the planning board .Please take the time to read the minutes and you would see what was going on.I was going to spend $30,000 and up to change the front of the building and was denied the right to do so.I was putting in a Gazabo and many plants and cobblestone patio.It would have been the most attrictive building in El Kisco.You are right that we are out of place .We do not take this B.S. lightly,Your government in El Kisco sure took care of this town.All the illegals,crime,empty stores etc.If they had a brain in there heads they would welcome and work with business to improve conditions.I wonder if the property owners in El Kisco are happy with there current home values due to the towns control of the illegal population.I would love to see your house or furniture etc.I bet its a pile of junk. I thought he was going out of business for the last ten years or so. I have lived in Mount Kisco for 20 year and never stepped in his shop, good guy? bad guy? I don't know, but I will say this, the store is a rented now. Who's really goint to rent it now. Can you say Border's, Victoria Secret, Art Emporium, Wine Junction, Dansk, Baskin Robins, Villa Rina, Mount Kisco Kosher, Enzo's..... SURE YA CAN. If we are not carefull this town will have more vacancies then the Bates Motel. Dennis A.

The Neon sign law I asked Tom Auchterione to ask three questions to the Town Manager.when he talked to me about the going out of business sale.He did ask one question about selective enforcement and the village managers answer was that he was not aware of any.If this is true why does the pizza shop next to the train station ever conform with the NEON law.They were given tickets or must comply orders but no fines and this happened over 2 years ago.Its also interesting that the town owns the building.Tom did not ask anything else like why patio.com never complied with the law or was never fined.The village manager failed to mention that patio.com never followed the law and never got fined.The village made everyone take down there signs and to tell you the truth I do not think the law was really passed . some people were fighting the law and the village must have backed off.Everyone in the village knows something but are not telling anyone.I am talking the Building inspector,Mayor,Village attorney etc something funny going on.By the way,I put back My Neon sign and recived a notice from the village within 45 minutes.Who says not selective and everyone is treated the same.More B.S.Tom Auchterione the reporter on this story is afraid to ask questions in fear of being shut out from the loop.I wish I could get a reporter to ask the proper questions but they are not willing to inquire farther with questions and they believe what these evasive people tell them.Its called No Balls!

It is painfully apparent that customer service is not one of your strong points, Tim, so here is a free lesson for you: A customer that comes to your shop with a recently purchased bench in perfect condition - except for a cleanly broken leg - should be given a replacement bench. Period, end of story! There should be no third degree examination, no cursing and no questions - the bench should be replaced with an apology and a smile. Then, the customer would know that you stand behind your wares and the customer would feel comfortable buying the other items in your store that they were thinking of purchasing. End result: a satisfied customer and a very happy store owner! Tim, compare and contrast the above lesson in proper customer service to the rude and shabby treatment I suffered at your hands - and you will undoubtedly discover one of the main reasons that your store is shutting down on Tuesday.

I agree. this town has selectively enforced its building codes for the past decade at least. The problem lies with the building inspector and the bunch of idiots who run the town who clearly are not looking to protect individuals for safety concerns. Rather they look to generate income by implementing egregious fines other municipalities fine a fraction for . Rather than work with property owners to remedy issues, they seek to use such violations as a money generating activity rather than a quality of life tool. Less violations, more warnings, working together makes for a safer community. Not taking advantage of the very people who pay the taxes which support this town is the answer. As it is clear that a small minority control this town, it is time that the people start utilizing the power of the vote to remove these morons.

Vacancies are never good, however Mt Kisco may be better off with this one.
