New Castle to Get More Con Ed Crews

Town Administrator gives update.

(Editor's Note: Below is a Saturday evening status update from New Castle Town Administrator Penny Paderewski on the town getting more help from Con Edison for post-Hurricane Sandy recovery.)

New Castle has been assigned additional crews to move us ahead more quickly in the clean up. Special attention is being spent on neighborhoods that have been blocked in, opening schools, and getting all streets opened up. Both clean up and restoration is taking place. We will keep updates coming to you daily. I have been working with the Police Department and the Public Works Department in the Emergency Operations Center in getting updates out to you. Update again tomorrow. Stay safe.

Wherever we go outside New Castle we see crews working , but we see no trucks on Rte 100 in Millwood. We live on Hidden Hollow Lane and are told that we won't get power until next weekend at the earliest...so your "updates" are little comfort, especially as the temps drop!

The crux of this problems is that the local government inexcusably relied on Con Edison, a company that has proven itself unable to handle emergencies time and again, and continues to beg their help instead of seeking alternatives. Con Edison’s incompetence is well established. Stop begging for help from Con Ed and find some real solutions. There are hundreds of electrical contractors out there, as well as out of state workers, and local tree companies. Stop telling us why you haven't been able to help, and just do it!

I have been on the phone with ConEd numerous times, as have my neighbors. They are unable to give us the slightest hint as to when crews might be coming to our road. The only thing they can say is that we will have power by next weekend, but hopefully before. We are on Rte 133 in Chappaqua, a state road which has been cleared and haven't seen a ConEd truck doing any work on our road in days! For this we get to pay some of the highest rates in the country!? New Castle police told me we have 1 crew in Chappaqua! ONE CREW IN CHAPPAQUA! Seriously?! This is just unbelievable! ... and try getting in touch with our Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter, or Astorino no answer for either of them. In calling Cuomo's office you get a recording with another number to call. I called that other number - the hurricane sandy hotline and left a message... that should do a lot! I really do hope that Con Ed is held accountable for their continued poor service!

I talked to a Chappaqua Volunteer fireman about an hour ago. He said that last year, during Irene and the snow storm they helped Con Ed remove trees from roads in case of an emergency. This year, ConEd refused their help. During the worst storm, ConEd REFUSED help. I'm appalled. All the liaison people should be FIRED right now. I could do a better job of coordinating than they. At least, I would not refuse help from ANYONE. Please everyone contact ConEd and ask them why they refusedhelp from our wonderful firefighters.

We really need a municipal electric contract that allows government to engage contractors from other areas without interference from Con Edison.
