Schoenberger, Day to Seek County Exec. Post [UPDATED]

County legislators confirm they are running for Rockland County Executive

After much speculation, Rockland County Legislators Ed Day and Ilan Schoenberger confirmed they are seeking the post of county executive.  Both had indicated previously they were considering entering the race. Schoenberger said C. Scott Vanderhoef’s decision not to run for another term as county executive accelerated the timeline.

“I was really putting off making a decision till January, February, March of next year,” said Schoenberger.

Day said he was originally planning to speak about his intentions at a fundraiser scheduled for Nov. 14, which was postponed because of Hurricane Sandy until Dec. 11.

Both said they have received considerable support from throughout the county already.

“We do have a large group of people already organized,” said Day. “We have a full county committee of 30 to 35. These are members of the community whether civic associations or business groups.”

Day (R-NewCity/Pomona), explained a bi-partisan group of 150 volunteers from all towns is in place and he expects that number to swell now that his candidacy is official.

Schoenberger (D-Suffern) said his decision was prompted by outreach of residents of all walks of life from throughout the county.

“At the urging of those people I decided I should run,” he said. “I’m working on putting together the campaign committee now.”

Schoenberger and Day plan to formally announce their candidacy at fundraisers next month and to detail their plans for the county’s future.

Day said, “They need to hear what direction that person is going to try to take us. This is truly about the support of the people in the community and what they want to see happen.”

“I would like to rewrite the way county government operates,” said Schoenberger, adding that includes consolidating services and coordinating programs with towns and villages.

Schoenberger’s fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the New York County Club. Day’s fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Nyack Seaport.

Schoenberger cut in front of me and the rest of a long line waiting for gas after Hurricane Sandy. He lost my vote.

Here's something that was posted on preserveramapo.com. He won all four districts of NEW SQUARE but lost the remaining 10. "ELECTION RESULTS FOR ILAN SCHOENBERGER Take a look at the election results for Ilan Schoenberger and you may (or may not) be surprised. After 30 years in government and over 15 years in the Legislature…. With the advantage of the Democratic, Conservative, Independence and Working Families lines…. With one lonely opponent- Mike Parietti- on the Preserve Ramapo line, Row G who had no election signs and accepted no campaign contributions of any kind, Here are the results: Ilan won the 4 election districts of New Square 2,195 to 4. Ilan lost the remaining 10 election districts by a 2 to 1 margin- 1044 to 535. Ilan lost even his own home election district- where he has lived for 30 years- by a margin of 114 to 66. It says something when your own neighbors don’t vote for you! This conclusively demonstrates that, without the blessing of New Square’s leadership and their election day edict to vote for Ilan, the “Boss” of the Legislature would have been forced into retirement."

Would like to see Patch provide us with a side by side comparison of the voting records for each candidate. Any possibility for that?

While one would have to research it, the minutes (and votes/debates) of all meetings can be found through this link - http://rocklandgov.com/departments/county-legislature/legislative-agendas/ For those specifically interested in budget votes, typically you will find that as part of the first meeting of each December. A general overview of my efforts, along with speeches, statements, and newsletters (on the right side of the page) can be found at - http://rocklandgov.com/departments/county-legislature/edwin-j-day/ One could also go to www.edday.us for information and YouTube for a couple of segments that are posted here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDBFupOsk40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-4QM2EEqK0 I welcome any comparisons along with the transparent assessment of my record and efforts. That is what the process is supposed to be about, not slick storytelling, party affiliations, and commentary designed to distract one form the truth. While I know I am not perfect by any means, I believe that the general direction of both my representation of the people of our community and my efforts on their behalf has been solid and well intentioned.

Any candidates for this position should be subject to random drug and alcohol tests.
