West Patent Learning Garden in Final Push To Expand

West Patent Elementary is looking to the Bedford community for help toward the expansion of our Learning Garden with donations of funds, materials or labor. Join us November 3rd!

The West Patent Elementary School Learning Garden Committee recently received a generous $3000 grant towards the expansion of our current vegetable garden and addition of an outdoor classroom.  With this grant the Committee is now only a few hundred dollars short of the goal needed to complete our expansion plan.  We are looking to the greater Bedford community for help in making this expansion dream a reality with donations of needed funds, materials or labor.

Built in 2009, our vegetable garden, located near West Patent’s lower playing fields, has been able to provide over the last three years a place where small groups of children were able to ‘wake up the beds” in spring, plant seeds and seedlings, harvest in the fall and “put the gardens to bed” as cold weather set in.  However, at it’s current size, the garden accommodates only approximately ten children at a time, necessitating the division of classes, splitting lesson plans and wasting valuable time.  In addition, in the current minimal garden space the number and type of plantings are quite limited.

The expansion of this garden, as drawn by landscape architect Seth Ticehurst of who donated his services, will accommodate more children per visit, provide wheelchair accessibility and include an new ‘outdoor classroom’ where teachers can literally bring the curricula to life.  The new space will also facilitate WPESA’s teachers ability to make intimate connections between the garden and their curricula.  Consultants from Kaleidoscope Garden Design LLC will be assisting in tailoring specific lesson plans to incorporate the school garden into existing classroom instruction in a manner that supports the NYS Core Curriculum learning standards.

If we procure the final needed funds and materials, the construction of our new garden space will take place on November 3rd.  We hope that members of the community will join with us on that day to measure the wood, hammer in the nails, and fill the planters with soil to create this new, expanded garden.  All welcome, no experience required!

Hope to see you then or please contact us if you can help us procure the following materials:

  • SMALL SHED:  ($1,000)*
  • GARDEN TOOLS:  ($25 ea.)
  • LUMBER or FENCING:  ($10 per ft.)
  • CHICKEN WIRE:  ($5 per ft.)
  • COMPOST/TOP SOIL:    ($8 per sq. yd.)
  • (est. value and/or suggested donation) Cash donations should be made out to WPESA mailed to West Patent Elementary School, attention Garden.  Please email marplegirl@optonline.net to arrange donation of specific items or labor.
