Back to School: What's on Your Shopping List?

Parents spend about $688 on back-to-school expenses. What is the number one item you shop for to get the kids ready for school?

From Staples to Target to DSW, the back-to-school commercials are officially in overdrive. And in Mount Kisco and New Castle, the beginning of the school year is just a few weeks away.

For the parents and caregivers out there, that means lots of shopping for notebooks, backpacks, laptops and locker decor in the next few weeks.

On average, folks with kids in grades K-12 will spend $688.62 on back-to-school supplies this year, according to a survey by the National Retail Foundation. That's up from the average of $603.63 last year, the NRF reports.
