Bedford BOE: Capital Plan Rec, Security Co. on Agenda

The Bedford Central School District's Board of Education meets tonight at 7 p.m.

Tonight's Bedford Central school board agenda is a busy one, as it includes several key items that have taken up much of the district's dialogue in recent months.

Notable is the fact that Superintendent Jere Hochman intends to offer a recommended package for the capital plan, a series of major building renovations and fixes that is anticipated to be put up for an October bond vote. While Hochman did not release his formal recommendations, in a memo attached to the board's agenda, a recap is given of some of the major items considered, such as a comprehensive renovation of West Patent Elementary School, dealing with schools securty, cafeteria and science lab space at Fox Lane Middle School, and the track and field space for Fox Lane High School.

Also on the agenda is a resolution for the school board to approve hiring a security company, which would provide campus greeting services and school perimeter services. The company is called Summit Security Services, Inc and is based in Hartsdale. Its billing would be for a rate of $26.70 per hour, per person who is placed in the district. Schools security has been a major topic among Bedford Central residents since the mass shooting at a Newtown, CT elementary school, with some calling for the district to have armed police on patrol. Recently, Hochman wrote a letter to the supervisors and Bedford and Pound Ridge, along with the mayor of Mount Kisco, requesting police assistance.
