Bedford Schools to Hold Several Makeup Days

Impact from Hurricane Sandy, snow days, take toll on school year schedule. Middle school and high school to make up four days, while elementary schools will make up two, superintendent writes.

(Editor's Note: Below is a status update letter from Bedford schools Superintendent Jere Hochman on the number of makeup days that will be held. The days are the result of exhausting designated time off due to Hurricane Sandy and mutliple snow days. Fox Lane Middle School and Fox Lane High School have additional makeup days than the elementary schools)

Dear Bedford Central School District Parents, Guardians, and Students:

The following is an update on this year’s calendar and make-up days.  As noted in previous emails, students with scheduled community events, college visits, and other unavoidable absences will receive excused absences and all work will be accepted.

All Schools:

April 1 is a full day school day.  This was a day off originally.

May 3 is a full day school day.  This was a Superintendent’s Conference day originally

Elementary Schools Only:

  • March 14 & 15 – Parent / Teacher Conference Days.  There is no change from original calendar for elementary schools.
  • March 14 is a 1/2 day for elementary schools and no school on Friday March 15 - Parent / Teacher conferences will occur.

Middle School and High School:

  • March 14 & 15 are now FULL "REGULAR" SCHOOL DAYS for Middle and High School.  We will not hold parent-teacher conferences for middle and high school.

Notes:
March 25 – 29 is still “March break” however… if we have one more snow day (or other reason to lose a day of school March 25 will be a school day.
If a second snow day… March 26 will be a school day

If a third snow day March 27 will be a school day.
If a fourth snow day… March 28 will be a school day.
If a fifth snow day… TBD

I know the snow days, delayed starts, early release days, and event cancellations are a challenge in making arrangements at home and for child care.  Similarly, holding school on days previously scheduled as days off from school are a challenge and interfere with other appointments and plans.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

On a related note, a draft of the 2013-2014 calendar will be released this Wednesday.   It looks very different than this year – and maybe we will not have a hurricane and power outages with which to contend along the way.

Respectfully,

Jere Hochman

Superintendent of Schools
