Board Promotes Fishkin to Roaring Brook Principal

Fishkin's experience cited by superintendent as major reason for picking her.

At its Tuesday meeting, Amy Fishkin was unanimously approved by the Chappaqua school board to become the new principal of .

Fishkin, whose pick was by Superintendent Lyn McKay, is currently the assistant principal at the school, a position that she has held for five years. Prior to that, she was a teacher at Westorchard Elementary School.

“When I think about what we need as a leader, I think first and foremost about communication, and I know how well Amy communicates," McKay told the board at the start of the meeting.

Fishkin is filling a position that was vacated close to a year ago by Eric Byrne when he was promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. For this school year, Peter Berendt has filled in as interim principal. The job search process for the district, which kicked off last fall, had to start over in February when some of the finalists dropped out. In the second search round, the district had about 100 applications, McKay explained. The field was narrowed down to two finalists before Fishkin was picked by an interviewing committee.

School board President Alyson Kiesel said, “I am thrilled as both board president and Roaring Brook parent.”

An excited Fishkin addressed district officials and attendees.

“During my 14 years in Chappaqua, first as a teacher and now as an administrator, I’ve embraced the thoughtful and innovative ways that we strive to educate our students," she said.

Fishkin's appointment is effective July 1.
