Briarcliff Residents Pass Revised School Budget

Scarsdale, Elmsford residents also approved lower spending plans than the proposals they nixed in May.

Briarcliff Manor voters hit the Todd Elementary School polls for a second time in less than one month today.

A second try at a 2013-14 schools’ budget passed with a 79.8 percent approval rate. The vote was 1,056 "yes;" 267 residents voted "no."

The first budget go-round asked residents to weigh in on a proposal that busted the New York State “tax cap,”
which limits the amount a school district can increase the tax levy year-to-year. That budget failed to receive the necessary 60 percent supermajority vote it needed to pass.

The $46,785,000 figure presented to the public today came out to a 3.15 percent tax levy increase compared to the current year, which falls within the state’s cap. It includes more than $600,000 in cost reductions compared to the first proposal.

Downcounty, the Scarsdale and Elmsford school boards got their revised spending planned passed by voters as well.

Scarsdale's vote came on the heels of longtime Superintendent Michael McGill's announcement of his retirement next year. McGill has been with the Scarsdale School District since 1998.
