Board Members Take Oaths; Kirsch Becomes Seven Bridges Interim Principal

Meanwhile, Jeffery Mester is chosen to be board president, while Karen Visser becomes vice president.

Members of Chappaqua's school board took their oaths of office Wednesday night at their annual reorganizational meeting, which marks the official start of the 2013-14  school year.

Starting off were the two members whose terms began on July 1: Jeffrey Mester, who is serving in his third term, and new member Warren Messner. Fellow board members Karen Visser, Alyson Kiesel and Victoria Tipp also took oaths, as did Superintendent Lyn McKay and District Clerk Theresa Markey.

The board changed its leadership for the school year, picking Mester for president and Visser for vice president. Mester, who previously held the post during the 2009-10 school year, succeeds Tipp, while Visser succeeds Kiesel. For Visser, who was elected to the board in 2011, it is the first time that she is holding a leadership role.

Video clips of the oaths are attached to this story.

Kirsch Picked for Seven Bridges Interim Principal

Michael Kirsch, who recently retired after serving as Douglas G. Grafflin Elementary School principal for more than three decades, will not be leaving the district just yet. The school board voted to appoint him to serve as Interim Principal of Seven Bridges Middle School. His appoint is effective retroactively from Tuesday until June 30, 2014.

The decision to select Kirsch came after officials decided that they were not satisfied with a group of candidates who applied for the job this spring as part of a search, according to Superintendent Lyn McKay. A new search is expected to commence in January or before that, McKay told Patch.

The principal position became vacant after Martha Zornow stepped down to join a school in New York City.
