Chappaqua School Budget To Be Put Up For BOE Vote Tonight

Figures match earlier disclosures.

The Chappaqua Central School District Board of Education is expected to vote on a final budget for the 2010-11 school year at tonight's meeting. Major details of the budget include a 2.32 percent tax levy increase, and a 2.38 percent increase in the tax rate per $1,000 of assessed valuation for New Castle residents in the district. At a total of 109,391,348, the budget will represent a 1.9 percent spending increase from the 2009-10 budget.

Taxes and spending have been major points of contention for residents. At last week's meeting, where the board unveiled specific tax changes several residents voiced concern about the rate of the budget's increase, the cost of employee salaries and benefits and property tax levels. A taxpayers' watchdog group made up of several residents, called New Castle Citizens For Responsible Education, has also stepped up its attention to the debate, with a turnout at last week's meeting.

The meeting will be at 8:15, at Horace Greeley High School. The budget that the board adopts will be put up for a vote on May 18, which will also be the election for Board of Education candidates.
