Final Tax Increase For Chap Schools Slightly Higher Than Projected

A lower than projected assessment value cited.

The final 2010-11 tax levy figures for the Chappaqua Central School District show that residents will see an increase slightly higher than expected when voters approved the budget in May.

New Castle residents will see a tax increase of 2.48 percent, or $95.62 per $1,000 of assessed value, according to Bention, the Chappaqua school board president. That's up from the projected 2.37 percent increase, which translated to $95.51 per $1,000.

Mount Pleasant residents in the district will get an increase of 12.43 percent, or $1,273.65 per $1,000, according to Bention. The projected hike was 12.31 percent, or $1,272.30 per $1,000. The reason why Mount Pleasant residents see a much larger percentage increase than their New Castle counterparts is due to differences in the equalization rate.

Benton explained that the total levy is $98,133,505 for this coming year, versus $95,909,088 for last year. The school board approved of a resolution to confirm and approve of the the tax roll changes at its Aug. 10 meeting, according to Benton.

Benton said the change is because the assessed valuations in both towns were found to be lower than projected. For New Castle, the final figure is $933,825,033 versus the projected $933,993,627. For Mount Pleasant the final figure is $6,945,201, lower than the estimated $7,014,251, according to numbers provided by Benton.
