Fox Lane Holds Tag Sale For Wellness Day

Proceeds from sale go to funding annual event.

With tables filled with assorted items ranging from old TV's to Christmas merchandise, Fox Lane High School held a tag sale on the morning and afternoon of March 6 in its large cafeteria to raise money for its annual Wellness Day.

Robin Schamberg, an assistant principal who helps plan the annual event, said it was the fourth year that a tag sale was being done. The event was scheduled for March 7 as well, with a shorter time frame.

Wellness Day was started in 2004 as a community-building event in response to concerns from students who worried about issues such as stereotyping, homophobia and sexual harassment, Schamberg said. Since then, it was grown to include more amenities, which required raising money to pay for them. These include amenities such as giving everyone a community lunch and giving away t-shirts. This year's event, she said, will include food served by The Table, which is a local market based in Bedford Hills.

Items that were not purchased at the tag sale would either be given to the Salvation Army or discarded, Schamberg said.

Students who were part of the school's committee for Wellness Day offered their opinions of the sale.

"It's always a very successful event and it draws a lot of the community," said Pushpa Neppala and senior and a co-chair. Neppala said that she has been on the committee since she was a sophomore.

Sara Marino, a senior, committee co-chair and daughter of Board of Education Vice President Donna Marino, felt the sale was going well and that they had a lot of people. Marino said that it was her second year on the committee.

People who came browsing for items offered their opinions on the sale.

Helen Bart, a Somers resident who lives in the Katonah postal region, is a self-described "tag sale queen," who goes to sales in Westchester with her – her "tag sale twin" – every Saturday. Bart came to the Fox Lane tag sale in search of things to use in redoing her 23-year-old son's room. She also said that you can never know what you will find.

Mary Palmer, Yonkers, came to look for clothes, and also said that goes to tag sales once a month.

Thomas and Katharina Heaphy, both Pound Ridge residents, came to browse and offered different takes.

Katharina Heaphy said that she has gone to the tag sale in previous years and she has found something. She also said that they are fun to poke around. However, Thomas Heaphy didn't think that he would find something at the tag sale because the items he saw were not ones he felt he could use. He said that they were better suited for people with children.
