Fox Lane Seniors Selected for All-State Music Ensembles

Jakob Ebers, Ursula Seymour and Leigh Tooker will participate in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Ensembles.

Three Fox Lane High School musicians have been selected from thousands of students throughout New York State to participate in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Ensembles.

Jakob Ebers, a 12th grade jazz bass player will perform as a member of the All-State Vocal Jazz Choir’s rhythm section. Ursula Seymour is a 12th grade soprano singing with the All-State Women’s Choir and Leigh Tooker, a 12th grade jazz vocalist, will perform in the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Selection for participation was based upon the student’s solo performance rating in the NYSSMA Solo Festivals held this past spring, in which over 10,000 students vied for spots in the All-State Ensembles. Ursula and Leigh participate in the Fox Lane High School choral program under the direction of Edward Reisert. Jakob performs with the Fox Lane High School Jazz Band under the direction of Joey Berkley. The state conference will be held November 29th through December 1st, 2012 at the Rochester Convention Center, Rochester, New York.

Congratulations to these student musicians who will represent our community in their performances at The Eastman Theater in Rochester. The road to an All-State seat is an arduous process that begins with a balanced and sequential K-12 curriculum in our public school system. Children practice for years and often perform at NYSSMA festivals from elementary school through their All-State audition on high school, with stops in All-County (WCSMA) and All-District groups along the way. From the 10,000 students mentioned above, only about 900 make it into an All-State ensemble. As someone who has judged All-State applicants for over 20 years, I applaud these young musicians and especially their public school music teachers who deliver and parents who support and insist on a quality program of Arts Education in our public schools. Thank you to all of Bedford's music teachers!
