McKay Stays Mum on Tribou, Outlines Absence Process

While district officials cannot comment on status of suspended football coach, superintendent offers generalities of what the process involves.

At Tuesday's Chappaqua school board meeting, Superintendent Lyn McKay reiterated the district's inability to comment on the status of longtime Horace Greeley High School football coach Bill Tribou.

“Our coach is still on leave, and parents and players are worried and they really want to know the status and we understand that," she said.

While updates on Tribou, who , cannot be discussed - legal and privacy reasons have been cited previously by the district - McKay outlined what employees who are on leave face, including those facing disciplinary proceeding.

Employees may take absence for several reasons, she explained, including family, sickness, child care or for discipline. A change in the disciplinary status will change when both sides involved come to an agreement, she said. If the two parties do not, then a hearing officer intervenes to make a decision. A new law requires that a hearing must be held within 125 days, she explained.

The disclosure of the process comes after several people at a recent board meeting on what could happen.

While it is unknown as to whether Tribou's suspension status will change any time soon, school board meeting agendas may hold a clue in the event that an employee is fired. Terminated personnel could be listed under either their employee number or by name, according to District Clerk Theresa Markley.

"It's according to the circumstances," Markley said.

In the meantime, assistant coaching staff are running the football team's operations, including spring workouts and preseason training. Assistants will be on hand to help with the annual , where players test their feats of strength.
