Mount Kisco & Bedford Hills Students Recognized by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth

Two local students were recognized recently for their outstanding academic performances by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

JAEGER DOCHTERMANN, a student from Bedford Hills, NY,  and SARA GILBERT, from Mount Kisco, NY, were recently honored as one of the brightest young students in the nation at a regional awards ceremony for academically advanced children sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

The Center honored JAEGER, a participant in the CTY Talent Search, for his exceptional performance on the SAT and ACT’s  (the same tests used for college admissions) that he took during his 7th grade year/12-years old.  SARA was recognized for her excellence on the SCATA and the SPATIAL TEST BATTERY – STB test exams taken during her 8th grade year/13 years old.

JAEGER, a rising 8th grade student at FOX LANE MIDDLE SCHOOL, and SARA, who is completing her 9th grade year at FOX LANE HIGH SCHOOL, were two of more than 38,000 students from over 120 countries who participated in the CTY Talent Search. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only about 30 percent of students who participated earned an invitation to a CTY Awards Ceremony where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential. Jaeger was honored on Sunday, June 8th at a CTY Awards Ceremony at YALE University.

"The CTY awards ceremony congratulates students for their academic achievement, and it recognizes the defining roles that parents, educators, and others play in developing the academic talents of our outstanding honorees,” said Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of CTY. “For these advanced learners, there should be no gap between their capabilities and the opportunities open to them."

This summer Jaeger will be participating in a JHU CTY “Fast-Paced High School Biology” summer course at Skidmore College.  Jaeger has also qualified for the DUKE Talent Identification Program (TIP).  This fall, he will be entering 9th grade at Bedford Central School District Fox Lane High School.  In addition to academically challenging himself, Jaeger also enjoys playing jazz saxophone, lacrosse, tennis and triathlons.

In May, 2013 Sara participated in a CTY event at the Mathematics Department at Dartmouth College to explore the amazing and intellectual world of mathematics. Topics covered included number theory, differential geometry, combinatorics, mathematical logic, and network theory. Sara is in advanced mathematics (Geometry Honors) and advanced Italian (Italian 3).   She also enjoys acting and has participated in all three of the Fox Lane High School plays. Sara has also been involved in weekend acting classes and two performances.
