New Chappaqua Superintendent Will Be Revealed This Coming Tuesday

The new leader for the helm will also make an appearance at the school board meeting that night.

After a year of conducting a search, the Chappaqua Central School District Board of Education will announce who will be the district's new superintendent on March 29.

The new superintendent will make an appearance at the school board's meeting that night and make some remarks, according to board president Janet Benton. The meeting will be held at 8:15 p.m. at the auditorium at Robert E. Bell Middle School, according to a Wednesday email from the district. An email announcing the selection will be sent out "either right before or right after the public meeting," Benton explained.

The district began its search after a Feb. 2010 from then-Superintendent David Fleishman of his intent to step down by the end of the 2009-10 school year. He left the district after the school year concluded and as superintendent of the Newton, MA school system. The position is being filled this school year by John Chambers, whose previous academic career in Westchester including being superintendent in Byram Hills.

For the board, there were setbacks early in the process, which included receiving opposing a preference to look internally before looking for external candidates. A second setback came last summer when the first search firm, School Leadership, LLC, withdrew after doing an early survey and conducting a focus group. A new firm, Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, in September to assume the search. Since then, the board has been on track with its general selection timeline, which included doing candidate interviews earlier this year.
