Selesnick May Take Assistant Superintendent Post

In making a decision to pick him, superintendent cites his administrative and teaching experience.

Horace Greeley High School Principal Andrew Selesnick has been chosen for a promotion to Assistant Superintendent for Leadership Development and Human Resources.

Chappaqua schools Superintendent Lyn McKay announced the recommendation on Monday, which is expected to be voted on by the school board at its Tuesday meeting.

Selesnick, who has been a Chappaqua school employee for about 20 years - a Greeley English teacher, an assistant principal, then at the helm - will fill a position once occupied by , who passed away in April. The job is being filled by an interim replacement for the 2011-12 school year.

In taking over - the switch would be effective July 1, 2012 - Selesnick will be filling a position that demands more roles than in the past. In addition to overseeing human resources, according to McKay, he will oversee labor-management negotiations, as well as implementation of state-mandated changes to the evaluation system for teachers and administrators.

With the new state mandates in evaluation, McKay explained, "it's critical we have continuity in our district," referencing Selesnick's history. She also noted that he has already taken on a leadership role in implementing the standards as Greeley principal.

According to McKay district chose not to do an outside search to fill the slot because Selesnick filled the qualifications. A search for a new Greeley principal will begin in December and take into account both internal and external candidates. There is also a search underway for a new Roaring Brook Elementary School principal - the job is filled by an interim figure - to replace Eric Byrne, who stepped down last summer for become assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
