Helpful Hints for Your Teens Studying for Exams

Test taking is a stressful event for most teens, but it can be less stressful with some of the following suggestions. It could be helpful for you to go over these with your teen at a time when the tests are not imminent... even if the advice is solid, your teen might not be able to hear the suggestions if their test is tomorrow! I will post helpful hints in my next few blog entries. Let me know if  they help!

Make a study schedule. If you give yourself some time each day to review notes every day leading up to the test, hopefully 1-2 weeks ahead, you will feel better prepared. Some tens who wait til the last minute end up with more stress than just the feeling of being unprepared.. they lose sleep, eat too much or too little, and may feel depressed.

Take study breaks. Our brains tend to wander at the most inopportune times.. do you ever find yourself reading and re-reading the same sentences over and over again and still not grasp what you read? When that starts to happen take a quick break. Even standing up and taking a walk to the bathroom or kitchen for a quick light snack can help. Healthy snacks work better than the junk and caffeine since it will not give you the lasting energy you need. What ever you do during the break, make sure you make it a short one so you don’t end up losing focus altogether.
