Below are tips 3 and 4 in my series of 10 tips for parents of teens

3) Pick Your Battles

This is a common tip given and is certainly a wise one; however, no one ever said how difficult it could be!  While you might be tempted to run a commentary on your teen’s wardrobe and why she/he should not wear a certain shirt, think of the many more significant issues that will arise.  Teens need to feel some ownership to their own identity and picking their own clothing is a big one. 

4) Hit the “Pause” Button

Think of the Staples “Easy” button and you will get the idea here.  Think before you speak or act.  This is a very important lesson for both parents and teens to learn.  Remember, once your words are said they can’t be shoved back in your mouth.  Once they are typed electronically and the Send button is pushed, the message is out there in cyberspace for all eternity.  

You might apologize or regret an empty threat or snippy retort after the fact but it was still said and will be remembered.  Your words and actions are helping to shape your teen’s morals and values as well as their own model of parenting and disciplining.  Pausing is a skill that requires practice. Mistakes may be made, but it is a skill that is invaluable for all.
