Smooth Writing

I read an article the other day that described good writing as smooth writing. The type of writing where a reader doesn’t hesitate over sentences, but blissfully moves from word to word, from sentence to sentence at an even measured pace.  I have to say that I liked that description.  I realize that smooth writing is only one component to good writing, but I think it’s fundamental to well written prose.

We’ve all read poorly written work.  Nothing frustrates me more than to finish a sentence and realize that I don’t have a clue what the author intended.  Inevitably I return to the beginning and try again.  If I’m forced to do that too often, I give up and find something that is better written.  Don’t let that happen to you.

It seems to me that smooth writing also offers an answer to the age-old question, “Am I done yet?”  If your writing is at the point where readers don’t hesitate over your sentences, then you’ve probably done enough to let readers, well, read.  Think and write smoothly. Your readers will thank you in the end.
