'Tree of Life' Honors Patients' Loved Ones

Hospice care group's annual event remembers those who have passed on and were cared for.

The holidays can be a tough time for people who have recently lost their loved ones. On Wednesday, Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam brought some cheer with a remembrance tree lighting ceremony.

Called "Tree of Life," the event, held at the Mount Kisco Holiday Inn, included a Christmas tree lighting, with dove-shaped papers to remember those cared for.

“The Tree of Life is one important way for caregivers family to kick off the holiday season to remember loved ones who are no longer with us," said Michele Quirolo – president and CEO of Hospice Care.

Each year, the family of a deceased person whom the center for is honored. This year, it was the family of father Richard Wikane and daughter Judy Wikane, who died of cancer within months.

“This family was so remarkable to me, that they were able to rally around both their loved ones," said Mary Lou Scott, a hospice nurse involved with the family.

“I was lucky to be able to be part of this journey in their lives, and I appreciate and thank each and every one of them for allowing me to be a special part of their lives in this," Scott said.

Nancy Bila, a family friend and god mother of Judy Wikane, spoke fondly of them.

“Judy was incredible in so many regards," she said. "She was a sweet child, always fun. She also had a mischievous side to her, one that made you love her even more.”

She also noted Richard Wikane's humor.

“He was a good soul, a very humorous man.”

While the tone of the event was partly somber, it was at times uplifting, as choir high school students from Fox Lane and Horace Greeley brought carols and holiday cheer.
