From the Coach: Greeley Wrestlers Go to Sectionals

Horace Greeley High School is sending, a record, eight wrestlers on to the New York State Championship Sectional round this coming Saturday, February 11th. 113-pound junior, Kirby Atlas earned his 30th win this season and a spot at sectionals for the second consecutive year.  Kirby was determined to get back to the show (Sectionals).  Kirby has worked tirelessly all year to hone his skills on the mat.  He comes out of the gates on fire and does not stop until the final whistle.  120-pound junior, Bing Bing Xie earned his first shot at sections placing fourth in a tough weight class.  Bing Bing has had a great year.  He was sidelined mid-year with a troubling knee.  We rested him for two weeks before the divisions and he came back with a …

Welcome to Patch's daily snapshot of sports in Chappaqua and Mount Kisco.   Fox Lane dominates For Fox Lane's wrestling squad, it was a day of domination at the Division 1 divisionals at Harrison Feb. 4 as nine of its wrestlers came home with first-place finishes. They were Brandon Fay (99 pounds), Nick Engert (106), Frank Surace (113), Sam Speno (126), Danny Ventura (132), Tom Grippi (138), Matt Pasqualini (160) and Dan Clune (220).   Greeley's Lobien wins Horace Greeley hosted the Division 3 divisionals Feb. 4 and had the joy of one its wrestlers taking the title when Brent Lobien took home the crown in the 285-pound bracket. LaPoint Back Again As Rockland Boulders Manager

Former Yankee looks to improve upon 40-52 finish in 2011.

The Rockland Boulders say that former New York Yankee Dave LaPoint will return as manager for the 2012 season of the Can-Am League professional baseball team.   In 2011, the Boulders first season of play, LaPoint managed the team as it went 40-52, finishing in 5th place.   “This season we will be more prepared when it comes to putting the team on the field.” LaPoint said. “We have acquired some pretty good players in the offseason and are looking to add some more before the season starts. We have a beautiful stadium with great fans. It is our duty to improve on last year by quite a margin and we will do that,” he said. NY Giants Ticker-Tape Parade Set for Tuesday

The Super Bowl champions will be feted by NYC Tuesday.

The celebratory ticker tape parade for the New York Giants—winner of Super Bowl XLVI—will kick off at Battery Place and Washington Street in New York City on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. “Big Blue gave us a game to remember, and on Tuesday we're going to give them a parade to remember,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement today. The parade will travel north on the Canyon of Heroes to Worth Street. A ceremony will follow at City Hall, where the mayor will present the Keys to the City to the team. Welcome to Patch's daily snapshot of sports in Chappaqua and Mount Kisco.   Boys basketball Briarcliff boys basketball standout Brian Daniels was there when his Bears (11-5) needed him the most, as he scored 14 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter in leading Briarcliff to a 65-60 victory against visiting Horace Greeley (8-9) Feb. 3. Daniels also grabbed 12 boards and blocked four shots. For Greeley, Connor Domershick was on fire, scoring a team-high 27 points. Domershick basically could not miss from long-range, connecting on 8 of 9 from behind the 3-point line before missing a last-second heave at the end of regulation. Bedford School District Defends Decision to Replace Ayo Hart

Superintendent of Schools Jere Hochman warned parents and others against “assumptions” or thoughts that “our decisions are based on subjective or unfounded opinions.”

In a statement to the Bedford School Board, Superintendent Jere Hochman defended last month’s firing of longtime Fox Lane girls basketball coach Ayo Hart. Her dismissal—for reasons the district adamantly refuses to disclose—has generated a low-key controversy, with at least one petition already claiming 65 signatories beseeching officials to reinstate the coach. Hart, who was not a district employee, had been a part-time coach with the basketball program for 11 years, most recently as the varsity’s head coach. Her dismissal followed a Jan. 12 incident, in which she departed a game against Port Chester, leaving her team in the hands of an assistant coach. The Horace Greeley Wrestling Team honored its seven seniors before their match against Pleasantville on Wednesday evening. The seniors wrestled strong and helped propel their team to a 45-27 win. Senior captain Jon Russo (126) earned a technical fall 16-0 over Jose Nieves, senior Mike Orbeta (145) earned a major decision over Brandon Castro 15-3, and senior Ben Perlmutter wrestled up a weight class at 152 pounds to pin Michael Zakher in a 1:19.  Also scoring pins for Greeley were: Kirby Atlas (113) over Steven Montes in :38 seconds and Liam Mercer (160) over Mike Nuccio in 3:55.
