On the article Police: Robber Hits Mount Kisco Branch of Mahopac National Bank

Most Banks do not have Security Officers (Armed or Unarmed) in branches. They rely upon the CCTV systems, marked money and other systems (such as alarms etc). Their concern is not the money, but the safety of their customers and employees. Even if a branch does have a Armed Security presence their main job is to provide a visible deterrence to a possible robbery attempt and not to specifically halt it.

ReplyAs for your comment concerning a “particularly contentious divorce”; who is to judge that it is “particularly contentious”? and who would scrutinize applying for any license? A motorcycle license? A pistol permit? A drivers License? A hunting license? With no prior violent or criminal background why should you be able to stop him… or her, from making a purchase?
Many ugly divorces are completed where one or both parties own firearms, and unfortunately many where no one owns a firearm can become both violent and deadly. At this time, all local, state and federal laws were obeyed in the purchase of the shotgun. Now, thankfully in this country we have the ability to change laws by voting those into office that we choose to represent us.
The true tragedy here is the loss of four lives taken so violently and suddenly. -

ReplyWhy should it be a matter of public record? To obtain a rifle or shotgun the purchaser would have had to "pass" the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. This is run by the FBI and with “Instant Criminal Background Check"- once approved, the purchaser may take possession of the firearm. (This is not the law in NY City)
We do not judge people on what they "might" do. But we do hold them accountable for their past actions. Although it is both tragic and regrettable that these children and their mother were murdered by their father, the manner in which he obtained the firearm was lawful. He bludgeoned to death his wife. Even if he had been stopped from purchasing the shotgun I do not see how a more stringent gun law would have stopped her horrific death. We have some strong and useful gun laws, we just need to do a better job of enforcing them. At the time of the murder, they were still living in the same house. If there had been a fear of a physical confrontation then a restraining order would have been issued and he would not have been in the house. -

ReplyTo prevent day time burglary, one of the simplest things to do is lock all doors and first floor windows when not at home. The next step is to install and USE an alarm system. Alarm systems are not just for when you are not home, they are even more important when you ARE home. Getting more advanced includes looking at your landscaping and lighting.

ReplyLiving in the suburbs and in a relatively safe area causes many of us to become very relaxed in our personal safety measures. Locking all exterior doors should be common sense, but as we know, common sense is not common. Another safety measure that many do not follow is to use your alarm system when home. Most people use it when they are out, but the most important time to use it is when you are home. You should have home owners or renters insurance that will cover anything stolen when you are out, but when you truly need the protection of an alarm is when you in your home. When we come home we feel safe. We relax and let our guard down. Having an active alarm, even just for the perimeter ie doors and windows can make the difference.

On the article Police: Airsoft Guns Used In Incident At Woods Path Between Bell & Temple Beth El, No Charges Filed

ReplyUnfortunately Jake, this is an incident where airsoft guns were misused. Giving proper training and instilling safety rules should be something every parent does, whether they believe their children will interacting with any type of firearm or not. We can not keep our children under our supervision 24 hours a day and teaching them to understand the possable ramifications of what can happen when any type of "gun" is misused is very important. An airsoft gun is not a toy. As you mention, it can be used as part of a sport. A sport that has rules and requires safety equipment be worn by the players for their safety.
