American Association of University Women-Westchester Branch Meeting Guest Speaker: Technical Sergeant Kimberly Davis former Air Force veteran and sexual assault survivor.
On Wednesday October 2nd AAUW-Westchester will host Air
Force veteran Technical Sergeant Kimberly Davis who will share with us her
story of surviving a sexual assault while serving in the military. Sexual assault in the military has been a
frequent news story the past two years due in large part to three class action
lawsuits against the military and the investigative documentary, The Invisible War. Many of the plaintiffs in these lawsuits
were able to tell their stories in The
Invisible War, an award winning film that was featured at
AAUW-Westchester’s March 2013 meeting. AAUW
is a strong supporter of urging changes in the military where it has been reported that there were 26,000 cases of assaults against servicemen and
servicewomen in 2012 alone. Through its
Legal Advocacy Fund, AAUW has supported the recent class action lawsuits
including the one in which Davis is a plaintiff, Hoffman v. Panetta. Since
reporting her assault, Davis has become an advocate for others and has helped
many other victims in various ways.
We
are privileged that she will share her personal story of the consequences of
reporting sexual assault in the Air Force with us. While serving, Tech Sergeant Davis earned an Associate degree in Information Management from the Community College of the Air Force. She obtained her Bachelors degree in August 2012 in Psychology, specializing in Family Counseling. Currently she is working on her Masters in Mental Health Counseling at Long Island University.
The branch meeting will begin promptly at 6:00pm at the First Congregational Church, 210 Orchard Ridge Road, Chappaqua. The meeting is open to the general public
